This Saturday, Dec. 7, the Canisius community will come together for the inaugural Teddy Bear Toss, hosted during the men’s hockey game at the LECOM Harborcenter. The event will invite students, alumni and supporters to toss new, unused stuffed animals onto the ice after the Griffs score their first goal. Every teddy bear donated, each with its tag still on, will directly benefit the children at Oishei Children’s Hospital, bringing comfort and joy during the holiday season.
As the Residence Hall Association (RHA) president, my hope is to create a tradition that does more than build excitement in the arena. I want this to become a moment where students step beyond their dorms and daily routines to be part of something bigger than themselves. The Teddy Bear Toss embodies what RHA believes in: community, compassion and energizing campus life with purpose. By partnering with Canisius Athletics, we’re aiming to bridge the spirit of student leadership with the passion of Griffs sports culture, uniting two powerful parts of our campus identity.
Over the past week, donation bins have been placed throughout every residence hall and select townhouse locations, making it easy for students to contribute. On game day, we expect an incredible turnout, not only because the event is free for all Canisius students and accessible by the NFTA Metro, but because this campus shows up when it matters.
Looking ahead to Dec. 7, RHA is confident that our community will show generosity, spirit and pride. We’re excited to watch the arena light up when the first goal hits the net and hundreds of teddy bears rain down for an unforgettable cause. Most importantly, we know these donations will make a meaningful impact on children and families who need support the most.
We’re confident the Griffs will give it their best against RIT, and we can’t wait to celebrate a night of charity, school pride and unforgettable energy. As always, go Griffs!
