Canisius has been named the Best University in the 716 for the second consecutive year in the Best of the 716 contest held by the Buffalo News. The title was decided by voters. 


Beginning Oct. 1, 12:01 a.m. the United States Government started a "partial shutdown.” This is due to Congress being unable to pass or agree to current funding bills. 


On Oct. 1, the beloved British primatologist, ethologist and anthropologist, Jane Goodall, died due to natural causes. Her field studies with chimpanzees not only served as an inspiration for young women, but also changed the perception of how we view animals. 


Federal funding for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) officially stopped, and Oct. 1 marked the first day without government funding. It had been announced August 1 that there would be major layoffs around Sept. 30. CPB will maintain a skeleton crew until January 2026.


The IMPACT Center is hosting the first inaugural Celebration of Faculty Scholarship on Wednesday, Oct. 22 from 4-6 p.m. in Science Hall. The event is the faculty equivalent of the Ignatian Scholarship Day. Faculty will share their research, creative works and scholarly achievements through presentations and interactive displays. 


On Oct. 1, Israel intercepted the Gaza Sumad flotilla boats which were attempting to bring humanitarian aid to Gaza, taking civilians into custody. This is the most recent example of Israel blocking aid for Gaza and breaking international maritime law.


On Oct. 6 at 5 p.m. the Borders and Migrations Initiative will be hosting an event in the library learning center regarding the current situation at the border and the realities of migrants. This event is co-sponsored by Campus Ministry and will feature students who went on the service immersion trip as well as the education coordinator for the Kino Border Initiative. 


On Tuesday, Oct. 7, LUCHA and RHA will be holding a Latin Dance Event collab featuring a live band, dance instructors, food from different hispanic/latino businesses and more! The event is set to take place in both Regis and Grupp from 5-7:30 p.m. 


On Wednesday, Oct. 8, 2025, State of the University is scheduled to take place in Regis from 3-6 p.m. 


There are two new flexible housing programs designed specifically for commuter students who want the convenience of living on campus without committing to a full semester upfront: the Snowbound Housing Program and the Commuter-in-Residence Program. More information was emailed to commuters for those interested.
