At their show on Sept. 14, two members of Jane’s Addiction got into a fight on stage at their concert in Boston.
Video footage taken from the audience shows the lead singer Perry Farrell punching their guitarist, Dave Navarro. Following the show, the band posted an apology on Instagram and canceled the rest of their reunion tour in a social media post on Sept. 16.
The altercation was separated by crew members and the concert immediately came to a close as the crowd watched the spectacle unfold.
The cancellation comes after the band had completed more than half of their North American tour. However, some fans suspected that something was amiss even before the fight.
The New York Times spoke to one concert-goer who stated that Farrell’s comments about drug use in New Orleans made him immediately get up and leave, expressing that when he saw the band in the 1980s, it was a very different experience.
Jane’s Addiction and Farrell became best known for creating Lollapalooza, where “Jane’s Addiction was a headlining act,” The New York Times also wrote.
According to The Rolling Stone, the band reconciled with bass guitarist Eric Avery in 2022, and the tour was the first time that all members of the band have played together since 2010. Jane’s Addiction released their first single since reuniting in May of 2024 and announced the now-canceled tour just days after that release. They dropped a new single following the onstage outburst, according to Ultimate Classic Rock.
Navarro took to Instagram to state that Farrell’s “mental health difficulties” contributed to the band’s decision not to move forward, and included the signatures of members Eric Avery and Stephen Perkins. Navarro continued to say that their concern for Farrell’s “personal health and safety as well as [their] own has left [them] no alternative.”
The New York Times reported that a representative for Farrell reached out with a separate statement from him to express that he was deeply sorry, his “breaking point resulted in inexcusable behavior, and [he takes] full accountability for how [he] chose to handle the situation.”
