Participating in an Erasmus program in the US, particularly at Canisius University in Buffalo, NY, is an experience that leaves a lasting impact both academically and personally. Spending six months in an international setting offers multiple benefits, from broadening one’s perspective to enhancing professional development. Canisius University, known for its innovative teaching approach, offers a different learning style compared to European universities. By taking courses with American professors, students benefit from a highly interactive pedagogy, where class participation is strongly encouraged. This model fosters critical thinking and stimulates the exchange of ideas with students from diverse cultural backgrounds. Group projects are also a key component, enabling students to collaborate with peers from various parts of the world.

One of the greatest advantages of this experience is the total immersion in American culture. Living in Buffalo, a city with both urban and rural influence allows you to discover a different way of life, engage with locals, share in moments and better understand the diversity of American traditions. Participating in cultural events, such as hockey games, or local concerts, helps to fully integrate you into the city’s life. Moreover, the immersion challenges you to step outside your comfort zone, a crucial element for significant personal growth. Facing challenges in a foreign environment builds self-confidence and adaptability – qualities that are highly sought after in the professional world and can allow you the strength to participate in association with Canisius. For me it’s been The Griffin.

At Canisius, the opportunity to meet students from all over the world is a major asset. These exchanges not only help you form lasting friendships but also build an international network that can be invaluable in your professional future. Many of the university’s alumni are now working in influential companies and organizations worldwide. Such an experience can open doors to career opportunities whether in the US or elsewhere. Spending six months in the United States offers total immersion in the English language. Whether attending classes, talking with friends, travelling in Washington, D.C., Boston, New York or dealing with administrative tasks, English quickly becomes the primary language of daily life. This constant exposure greatly improves language proficiency and enhances interpersonal skills, both of which are valuable assets in today’s globalized world.

Spending time on an Erasmus exchange at Canisius is an incredibly rewarding experience. I liked everything in my Erasmus, even the weather in January (and it was complicated…). Between academic development, cultural enrichment, adventure, friendship and mastering English, this experience offers numerous advantages and is unforgettable!
