On Friday March 27, Canisius unveiled the new Golisano Center for Student Success. The center is located on the second floor of the library and bears a striking aesthetic difference compared to the rest of Canisius – and I think that’s a good thing. Canisius has one thing that it struggles with the most, and that’s modernization. Schools like Buffalo State University and the University at Buffalo have modernized campuses that provide plenty of unique visuals and places to study. While those are public institutions, other private institutions such as Niagara University also have such things.
I think that this new center is a step in the right direction towards moving away from the old look that Canisius currently has, especially considering the fact that most classrooms in Old Main and Horan O’Donell still utilize outdated technology. Freshman Jack Kalenik weighed in on Canisius’s use of this old technology, “The older technology can be useful, but only to an extent, at some point it will stop working as well in a teaching sense in comparison to newer technology.”
The new center also centralized the various student support services on campus, including the tutoring center, success center, ALANA center and international studies. Sophomore Ria Minhas gave her thoughts on the new center, saying, “I think it's a great idea to add new spaces for students to study and congregate. I think it's smart that they put all the resources in one area so you don't have to go across campus and back to get them.” The new space has various spots to study and a very bright atmosphere, which is different to the simple atmosphere and aesthetic on the first floor of the library. Freshman Aedan McGann expressed his opinions on the center. “I love all of the different spaces it has, instead of the study rooms in the library, it adds a lot of nooks and crannies, there’s variety.”
Overall, the new Golisano Center for Student Success has been a great addition to Canisius’s campus. The space provides a refreshing space for students to study and spend time with each other, as well as set the stage for future centralization and modernization efforts on campus.
