Sanders says “Greatness is on the horizon”

A speech from USA President Tim Sanders at final senate meeting of the semester

“Firstly, I, on behalf of the E-board, to you all and the rest of the student body, we would like to say thank you.

You have entrusted us all with a task unlike any other: to lead the charge in building a new student government.

I will be honest, I think we can all agree that this semester was tough, we encountered many problems that we could not expect, and were tasked with carrying loads in the midst of great change.

In light of these circumstances, I can say with confidence that we prevailed. As I said in my address to the freshman at the beginning of the semester, in times like these we must endure tirelessly – endure through our lows, and even at points where the chance of success seems out of reach. We must endure, and we did. So please, give yourselves a hand.

A songwriter once said, ‘You don't know the cost of the oil.’ She was referring to the process of creating oil from olives. In order to make oil, olives must be crushed. This semester has been our crushing process. Each of us has faced challenges that tested us, and it’s likely that few people will ever truly understand the weight that we carry – no one will fully know the cost of your oil.

Though that may be true, know this with certainty: We endure this because it leads to something greater, and greatness is just beyond the horizon. This semester may not have looked like what we all imagined it to be, however, do not be discouraged. It has been a season of growth; a time to discover who we are and what we’re capable of achieving. From day one, I believed this session of USA would be extraordinary – not because of any plans I had, but because of the incredible people I have standing beside me. From our senators to our liaisons and chairs, you have exceeded every expectation and shown what true leadership looks like.

With a new semester comes a new season. And that season will be the best season of USA. So, when your friends ask you what USA is doing, tell them, 'Just wait, because greatness is on the horizon.’

Thank you.”
