Supreme court rejects Trump’s regulations on mail ballots

By: Javohir Aminov, News Editor The Supreme Court Justices have rejected Trump’s restrictions on mail ballots. During the 2020 election against Joe Biden, President Donald Trump blamed mail ballots for his loss stating that “Mail boxes will be robbed, ballots will be forged and even illegally printed out and fraudulently signed,” according to an X post on May 26, 2020. As of 2026, he pushed the order to get rid of mail ballots as a whole.

However, the Justices in a majority vote has denied his bid, saying that it would be impossible to alter all mail ballots across the country since 30 percent of Americans vote by mail. With only two months before the midterm elections, there would be no time to change the uniform style for the entire mail ballot system and the system would be prone to mistakes. Moreover, the Trump administration stated that they would create a uniform envelope style, different from the current one, to try and maintain it with more federal authority.

Justices Samiel Alito and Clarence Thomas dissented from the order and were claimed as “legends” by Trump, but criticized those who voted against him. Claiming that “These are not the people I interviewed to serve on the United States Supreme Court, they are merely a shell of their original selves,” on social media. Justice Brett Kavanaugh, although voted against it, said he would circle back to Trump' s bid later on. 

Trump's allegations of voting fraud and abuse, claiming that Democrats skewed the results of the congressional ballots, proves to be false since there has been minimal evidence to prove it. Although it does occur, it’s extremely rare for the outcome of the votes to be altered.

Furthermore, according to CNN, he also stated that “people that aren’t citizens and illegals” will all get a ballot in the state of California, yet CaliforniaSecretaryofState.gov states that you have to be a registered U.S. citizen in order to vote in federal elections, proving his claim to be false.

A student, who wishes to remain anonymous, at Canisius caught wind of Trump's opinions on voting ballots and wanted to share a piece of their own thoughts. In response to Trump's claim stating that “millions of mail ballots will be printed by foreign countries,” they stated that they believe it was racially motivated for him to accuse them of fraud. “The one thing about the Supreme Court ruling that does concern me is that it's only a temporary hold until the case is over,” said the student.

Overall, the Supreme Court denied Trump's move to regulate mail ballots since the Justices have opposing beliefs, with midterm elections coming up this November and the possibility of instilling more federal power over the ballots. For now, Trump is displeased with the outcome, and will revisit this matter in the future.
