Every Thursday night, The Griffin staff meets in the office to finish, edit and publish our newspaper. These nights are the highlight of a lot of our weeks, usually due to the connections that we have all created.
One of the funniest sections, in my opinion, is the sports section in their little corner. The corner usually consists of Sports Editor Colin Richey, Assistant Sports Editor Peter Neville and Sports Layout Editor Andrew Nowel. Sports Editor Richey is a senior dual majoring in journalism and sports management. He has known that this is what he has wanted to do since he was a freshman in high school. He joined The Griffin’s sports section in his freshman year of college as a way to gain experience. Spring of his freshman year, he got the email to apply as an editor and then he became assistant sports editor. “It’s been about gaining more experience writing and editing and understanding how a newspaper functions and operates,” Richey stated. He writes for the Buffalo Bills On Sports Illustrated and he produces two YouTube livestreams/podcasts for Cover 1, which is a Buffalo Bills content channel. He also has an internship with Channel 4 coming up in the spring.
When he came to Canisius, Assistant Sports Editor Neville wasn’t sure what he wanted to do. He was a criminal justice major freshman year and he realized that was not what he wanted to do. His sophomore year, he felt like he hadn't done a lot, so he went to the general body meeting for The Griffin and realized sports was the section for him. He contributed during his sophomore year and at the end of the year, applied to be assistant sports editor and has not looked back since. In the spring of his sophomore year, he changed his major to journalism with a sports broadcasting concentration. In the past, Neville has done freelance writing for the Buffalo News and is “currently employed as a freelancer by the school working with the ESPN Production Center.” He also works part-time with Odyssey.
Junior journalism major Andrew Nowel is the current sports layout editor. He started writing for The Griffin as a freshman; his first article was written about a former Griffs hockey player, Ryan Schmelzer. He was also his high school journalist back home in Blairstown, N.J. He has been developing since his freshman year, reporting for soccer, basketball and baseball. He got into layout after realizing he had the knowledge of where certain things would look good because of his background in production and broadcasting. Doing layout is something Nowel enjoys doing because, “when it comes out, it’s just really cool for me.”
The best part about the sports corner, according to the boys, is, “we get all our work done early and can just goof around for hours.” Most Thursdays, they watch football and hockey – which is quite fitting for being the sports corner.
As someone who also writes for the sports section, I spend a decent amount of time with this corner. Specifically recently, I have been sitting in the corner, learning more about how they edit the articles. They teach me how to better myself and my articles and constantly make me a better writer. Their experience is something that every sports contributor can learn from, and we are all constantly learning from the corner.
