LASAF General Body Meeting a Success

Last Tuesday the Latin American Students and Friends club (LASAF) held a trivia night event for Women’s History Month.

The event began in Old Main 303 with pizza and wings being provided by LASAF while the members got the Kahoot! ready. During this time, Director of Student Engagement Jason Francey gave a small speech introducing himself and his role at Canisius. He also spoke about his goals as director of student engagement. After Francey finished his speech, he left early to attend another meeting.

Once the Kahoot! was set up, the room split into two teams: Blue and Red. The questions were primarily focused on Latin women and the contributions they made to history. Questions also covered women who contributed to history that were not Latin to include more students in the event and to educate others who were not familiar with them. There were three rounds in total: the first two were the Blue Team against the Red Team, and the final one was a free-for-all. The Blue Team won the first round, the Red Team won the second and LASAF Treasurer Katara Willis, won the third round.

According to a student who attended the general body meeting, the reception of the event was positive. The student said, “People really enjoyed themselves and showed how competitive they can be when they asked for a third round that put us all against each other.” This student also mentioned that the turnout for the meeting was impressive, having over 20 students involved.

The president of LASAF, Mercé De Jesús, stated that the goal of the club since its inception has been to provide a community for not only students of color, but for all students at Canisius to learn more about Latinx cultures. She and the rest of the members of LASAF wish to continue pursuing this goal with future events.

The next event LASAF has planned is the talent show on April 7 at 5:30 p.m. They will be partnering with the Residence Hall Association and the ALANA Center.
