How the passion of Bill’s Mafia unwittingly devalued the whole team in our eyes

With the 2026 NFL season finally upon us, fans of the Buffalo Bills will certainly have a lot they need to get used to. Many changes, of course, have occurred on the field with the coaching room seeing a complete overhaul and several new players suiting up in signature Bills colors for the first time. However, this season, the biggest adjustment is going to be one made off the field.  

For the first time since 1973, the Bills are going to be playing in a new stadium, Highmark Stadium, which will be located directly across the street from the old Bills stadium.  The Bills definitely needed a new stadium, the old one was crumbling at the seams and would soon be unfit to host events.  With countless renovations already being performed, it simply made sense for Bills owner, Terry Pegula, to try for a new stadium. However, the means by which he accomplished this feat have done irreparable damage to our pride and as much as I’d love to tell you that the ends have justified it, reports show that they sadly have not. 

When talks of a new stadium emerged in 2021, Terry Pegula was worth anywhere between five and a half and seven billion dollars. With the project expected to cost roughly one billion dollars, many expected Pegula to flip the bill or at the very least cover most of it. After all, he was well within his means and would still have more left over than most of us could fathom. Instead, Pegula immediately demanded that New York residents pay the entire cost of the stadium in their taxes or watch the Bills be relocated to Austin, Texas.  

The alternative is possibly the most catastrophic outcome for a city such as Buffalo. Not only would it ultimately cost our city a lot of money, but it would also be a massive mental blow to our city. The Bills Mafia is widely regarded as one of if not the most passionate fanbases in the league. They are the fanbase who routinely donates thousands of dollars to initiatives run by local and opposing players, the fanbase who turns out in the freezing cold to support the hometown team and a fanbase who wears their fandom like religion. Fans like that cannot be denied.

Therefore, the citizens accepted the burden while Pegula felt no strain at all. Now the citizens of New York suffer with higher taxes than before in a state which already pays notoriously high taxes, during an economic depression no less, due in part to the selfishness of a billionaire. What’s more, when the stadium opened its doors, many fans found that they were now unable to enter as the Bills now have the highest ticket cost in a league. Buffalo is a primarily blue collar city, which doesn’t have a lot of wealth.  Over one quarter of Buffalo residents live below the poverty line and now we’re being priced out by our own owners. On top of everything, taxes are expected to increase in upcoming years as the Pegulas expect us to cover the stadium's upkeep and future renovations as well. The stadium just opened and already we’re discussing renovations.

The actions of Terry Pegula and his team were, and continue to be, remarkably selfish.  At the top of this organization, we have people with unfathomable amounts of money and yet they all refuse to actually do something for us and ultimately make us struggle with a price they could easily pay, so why do we let them get away with this.  Simply put, it’s our passion for the team.

As unfortunate as it may seem, our mindset is exactly what makes it so easy for the Pegulas to control us with their money. The city of Buffalo has lost so much over its existence, we hold on to what we have tightly, even when it isn’t good for us, and ultimately, right now the Bills are not good for Buffalo.
