Griff’s Thrifts: Canisius’s very own sustainable thrift store!

Last Thursday, Feb. 22 was the grand opening of Canisius’s own on-campus thrift store. From an idea that was born on the floor of my dorm with my now-graduated roommate, Caroline Opalenick, I am now unbelievably grateful that this is a reality. As the Sustainability Committee, we extend our heartfelt gratitude for your overwhelming support during Griff's Thrifts’ Grand Opening Celebration. With over 70 guests in attendance, we collectively rescued 178 pieces of clothing from a fate in the landfill, providing them with a second chance at life.

This remarkable achievement highlights the power of our community's commitment to sustainability. Opting for secondhand clothing significantly reduces carbon emissions associated with new garment production and helps conserve precious water resources, contributing to a healthier planet. Your participation not only made our event a success but also made a tangible difference in our ongoing efforts towards environmental preservation.

In honor of our grand opening, let's take this opportunity to answer some commonly asked questions. 

What hours is the thrift store open?

The thrift store is generally open 12-4 p.m. Monday through Friday. Hours are dependent on volunteer availability, and we are always looking for volunteers.

Is the thrift store just for students?

The thrift store welcomes the entire Canisius Community, not just students.

Where is the thrift store located?

In the Palisano basement across from the new Smoothie Lab.

What kind of clothing do you accept?

We accept most clothing, except for undergarments, and we appreciate clothing free from stains and pet hair. 

Do you accept donations from the public?

Yes, we are working on having a donation bin where the public and Canisius community members can drop off clothing. The ABEC department also graciously offered to have a bin in their department office suite in Health Science. 

Do we have inclusive sizing?

Our inventory is ever evolving, with sizes ranging from XS to 3XB in more masculine attire. Feel free to drop by and browse our selection at any time.
