The Canisius Golf team wrapped up their season with a shared eighth-place finish with Siena after collecting scores of 297, 301 and 304 at the three-day Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Golf Championship in Lake Buena Vista, Florida.

After an even-par performance on Saturday, senior Ryan Edholm closed out his collegiate career in a five-way tie for sixth, earning him All-MAAC Championship honors. With that, the Tonawanda, NY native became just the fourth golfer in program history to earn All-MAAC honors multiple times throughout his career. David Hanes (‘20, ‘21) was the last to achieve the feat after earning his honors in 2017 and 2018. Edholm’s three-round score of 215 also marked the lowest score by a Canisius golfer at the MAAC Championship since the tournament moved to 54 holes in 2002.

After one round of golf, the Golden Griffins sat in eighth place after a collective nine-over-par performance. Both Edholm and sophomore Mikey Takacs shot at-par or better with scores of 71 (-1) and 72 (E), respectively. However, it was sophomore Alex Schickling who recorded the best hole of the day, highlighting the Griffs’ showing with his eagle-three on the par-5 15th hole. Edholm and Takacs both sat in the top-20 after 18.

On day two of the tournament, Edholm posted five birdies and three bogeys on his way to an even par performance. Takacs shot his way to a one-over-par round after shooting three birdies in the back nine. Meanwhile, freshman Chase Burgess struggled with three double bogeys en route to a +6 (78) round. The blue and gold still sat in eighth place on the leaderboard.

Takacs was able to produce a top-25 finish after landing in a three-way tie for second, while freshman Chase Burgess completed the Griff’s top-three performers finishing 41st overall.

While Sacred Heart and Rider sat atop the leaderboard after round one, day two marked a change in scenery as Iona’s score of 288 was good to claim the top spot, securing a two-stroke lead ahead of the Pioneers and Fairfield.

With ground to make up, the Stags were the only team on the third day to shoot at-par or better with a total score of -1 (287). Their strong finish made them the only team to score under-par after the three-round tournament, claiming the league’s conference championship and the team’s first title since 1997 and the program’s second in history.

The Stags’ freshman Tadgh Burke also claimed the individual title after shooting 67, 69 and 74 for a combined score of 210 (-6). The rookie was also honored with MAAC Rookie of the Year for his performance. Mount St. Mary’s Aaron Sorkin (-5) and the Pioneers’ Ethan Philips (-4) rounded out the podium.
