Finding yourself away from home

The Griffin

By: Clémence Burg

I am an international student who comes from France and this article will help you discover what it is to arrive in what I like to call “the North Pole.” Since arriving at Canisius in Buffalo, I have discovered the kindness of its students and teachers who will help you whatever the problem is. Like everyone in the world, when you arrive in a new country you will have some expectation or some stereotype in mind; but I think that if you want to integrate easily and feel good in this new environment you have to forget about those things because hey! I have news for you – life is never what we expect or how we imagine it!

I know that it can be a difficult thing to do for all of us because we arrive in this new country – wherever it is – with our “life luggage.” When you do that though, you can do anything: undertake every project you like, create all you want. I think that an exchange program is the best thing that we – as students – can have during our studies. It gives us the opportunity to discover new things, meet new people and see some things you would never see if you stayed at your own university. I will not deny that an exchange program takes us well out of our comfort zones, and that can be difficult.

It depends only on us to change our mindset to keep us open to possibilities, to meet new people and have new opportunities. According to me, exchange programs are extraordinary because despite the hard moments that we all have away from home, there is the possibility to relate to people that we would never know if we stayed in our own university. It is of course a university adventure with new classes and teachers, but besides that, it is also a human adventure. So, I think that during my exchange program this will be my goal: to keep my mind open and not miss any opportunity to make this exchange program an authentic experience that will be as unique as I am.
