Are You There?

Are you there, watching me grow into the person you hoped I’d be?

Are you there, laughing with me as I laugh with the girl I’ve known since seventh grade?

Are you there, splashing in the summer sun with my roommate and I?

Are you there, stuffing your face with cake after I blow out the two-and-one candles?

Are you there, screaming my name as I accept my diploma?

Are you there, wishing me luck on my big job interview? I’ve worked so hard.

Are you there, congratulating me on my engagement?

Are you there, crying with me as I hold the little girl I named after you?

Are you there, helping my daughter blow out the candles on her Elmo cake?

Are you there, holding my hand when I introduce my daughter to you?

Are you there? You were always there.

Now you’re not, yet I feel you.

I wish I could see you too.
