WordCamp Rochester 2024

By: Erik Schneider, Contributor

This past weekend, myself, Professor Ben Dunkle and students from Professor Dunkle’s Digital Media Arts classes took a trip to the Rochester School of The Arts in Rochester. Sixteen speakers – including Professor Dunkle and myself – spoke on our expertise regarding WordPress.

WordPress is a website that was originally created as a tool to publish blogs but has evolved to support publishing other web content, including more traditional websites, mailing lists and Internet forum, media galleries, membership sites, learning management systems and online stores. Professor Dunkle uses WordPress for his Digital Media Arts classes to answer questions about the project itself. You can also – as part of the project – upload your pictures of your project so everyone from the same class or a different class can see what you did.

Professor Dunkle spoke specifically about how you can make informed decisions using plugins – mini apps that streamline certain aspects of the user experience – and how to choose your plugins wisely. He presented alternatives to commonly used plugins, as well as ways to trim your plugin count down, resulting in a leaner, cleaner site. I spoke about how we use WordPress for Digital Media Arts and how we upload our projects and blog posts and explore the different themes on the website as part of a college educational program. After the event, we had an after-party at Jeremiah’s Tavern.

If anyone is interested in learning more about WordPress, the WordCamp Buffalo is happening next year on Saturday, May 3, 2025 at Seneca One Towers, downtown next to Salen Field.
