While students were away from campus, the women’s basketball team stayed busy. They competed in seven games over the break, all but one resulting in losses. After the students returned however, the Lady Griffs notched their third win of the season in a nail biting 66–63 win over the Iona Gaels.
With an overall record of 3–14 the women’s basketball team sits in 10th place in MAAC standings. Junior Franka Wittenberg cracked the top 25 in scoring, and leads the team in points with 165. Sophomore Shariah Gailes currently sits at third in the MAAC with 109 total rebounds, leading the team in that statistic while still being third in total points.
With conference play in full swing and seven weeks left in the regular season, the Griffs hold a playoff spot with their 2–5 MAAC record, and have six new conference opponents to face.
Since the start of the new year, games for the team have been decided by an average margin of six and a half points, besides their most recent loss to the MAAC-leading Fairfield Stags which resulted in a 97–51 defeat. With tight, competitive conference games, the team looks to build off these close contests and use their skills to help these next few games fall under the “W” column.
With two of the three wins for the Griffs being in MAAC play, the team has proven their capability in a competitive conference like the MAAC and has demonstrated the tools necessary to finish on top.
Canisius women’s basketball closes out the first month of 2025 on road. First, the team will travel to Poughkeepsie to face the Marist Red Foxes on Jan. 25 at 2 p.m. before taking on the Niagara Purple Eagles on Jan. 30 at 6 p.m.
