With each new season comes new and renewed trends in style to make us feel fashionably inadequate. That doesn’t mean you have to completely ditch your current closet for an all new wintery wardrobe – actually, I’m often quite the advocate for resisting the urge to succumb to these vicious trend cycles. I do think, however, that this particular snowy season has some pretty great garb that we should all give a shot.
Previously, I’ve complained about overly oversized attire – mostly because of my personal inability to pull the look off – but as the cold weather has officially ushered in with no signs of leaving us any time soon, baggy clothes loaded with layers underneath might just be the way to go. The line between looking casually comfortable and cool in an oversized outfit, and looking like Randy from “A Christmas Story” is thin and hard to walk. The key to staying on the cool side of that line is actually by staying warm and adding accessories aplenty, like cute hats and scarves. Winter is the time to wear all your favorite clothes…at the same time, and commit to the look of campy, over-the-top, comfort.
Burgundy is big this season, and I have to say, no other holiday hue hits harder than this one. I’m sick and tired of clothing sections turning entirely emerald-y green after the first leaf of autumn falls – that color is also tired, but burgundy is here to take the reigns and I love it. Burgundy feels so much more versatile than this dark, cool-toned green color that has us all in a chokehold that really only looks good with black or gold. And let’s be real, that combo is also overdone to the point of borderline tackiness. The warm, deep, crimson of burgundy looks great with your typical Christmas-y clothes, but also has a bold timelessness that will keep you looking on-trend, while still bringing all the 1970s, Parisian vibes that this color evokes.
We’ve already been talking about layering, and the most important aspect of an outfit like this is that top layer – the one people are actually going to see. Thankfully, another trend I’ve been seeing this year is statement jackets. I’ve seen more past-the-knee coats this winter than ever before, and all that campy, 70s, Paris-inspired style we’ve talked about comes together to make a killer coat. It’s the best way to wear a cute, but not weather-appropriate apparel without having to throw on that big, puffy jacket you’ve had since middle school and ruining the outfit. These coats can come in many different forms: A long peacoat can go on top of sweats, taking the look from leisurewear to streetwear; a sherpa or fur-lined jacket brings the best outdoorsy feel, fit for the season; and a sleek leather jacket, well, that goes with just about anything. The right coat can not only cover up the completely lackluster clothes underneath, leaving you looking effortlessly stylish; but it can also be the missing piece of your already polished fashion puzzle.
As an annoyingly stubborn trend skeptic, you can trust that these are the especially safe ones to dip your toes into this winter. You can also rest assured that if you do try any of these styles out, you already have my approval; and that’s what’s most important, right?
