The Only Thing More Powerful Than Hate Is Love

Super Bowl LX took place in San Francisco this past Sunday, and with it brought another very controversial music event: the halftime show.

Bad Bunny’s performance this year was controversial for many reasons. Some people didn’t like the fact that the performer was only speaking Spanish and “wasn’t American.” News flash people, Puerto Rico is in fact an American territory. Also, there have been plenty of performers in the past that haven’t been American citizens. The Weeknd? He’s Canadian, guys.

I won’t get political with this article because I personally wouldn’t want to read that, plus I don’t want to be biased. Who am I kidding though, this is an opinionated article. Joke’s on me!

I will say, the halftime performance felt lacking in something. I’ve spent all week racking my mind trying to put my finger on what that secret ingredient is, but alas I have failed. As many people have said, the halftime show was full of nothing but vibes, even if you couldn’t understand the lyrics. Bad Bunny brought out multiple guests: Lady Gaga and Ricky Martin appeared as the musical guests as well as Pedro Pascal, Jessica Alba, Karol G and Cardi B appearing during one of his sets.

Speaking of sets – how about the grass people? I don’t know if many of you have seen the TikTok “Digital Diary of one of Bad Bunny’s Grass People,” but this girl (@delaney_oconnell) documented as much as she could about what it was like to be a bunch of grass. It was pretty interesting to hear what that side of the show was like, although I can’t imagine how heavy those costumes were or how difficult it was to move around. The one thing I can’t stop giggling about is the one grass that kept dancing when they most likely shouldn’t have been. That would’ve been me.

ALSO. A couple actually got married??? I genuinely thought it was a staged wedding until I opened Instagram Monday morning and was informed otherwise. Thanks for telling me, guys, at least I know that Pubity has my back.

I can appreciate Bad Bunny’s passion for the storytelling in his sets and the way the show progressed. The set was filled with homages to the singer’s homeland, from sugar cane to boxers to the coconut vendor. I know a lot of people claim that the Super Bowl Halftime Show is meant for the football fans and needs to “stick to the American culture,” but I think that the beauty of America is the many cultures that influence said “American culture.” That’s exactly what he brought to the stage.

“Together, we are America.” Say it louder for the people in the back.
