The campus resources every Griff should know
By: Brendan Hammond, Contributing Writer
College involves more than attending classes and completing assignments. Between managing coursework, balancing extracurricular activities and navigating personal responsibilities, students can sometimes use additional support. Fortunately, Canisius University offers a variety of resources designed to help students succeed both inside and outside the classroom. However, knowing what is available and where to find it is an important part of making the most of the college experience.
One of the newest additions to campus is the Golisano Center for Student Success, which officially opened March 27, 2026. Located on the second floor of the Andrew L. Bouwhuis Library, the approximately 30,000–square–foot center brings several student support services together in one location. Students can access academic advising, success coaching, peer mentoring, career development and accessibility services without having to travel between different buildings.
The center also houses the Tutoring Center, where students can receive additional help with coursework, and the Writing Center, which offers assistance with everything from brainstorming to editing essays. Students looking to strengthen their study habits can also connect with academic mentors while Career Development provides résumé reviews, interview preparation and internship and job search assistance.
Support extends beyond academics. The Student Health Center, located in Frisch Hall, provides health care services while the Counseling Center in Bosch Hall offers mental health support and counseling. Students also have access to Uwill, a 24–hour counseling and crisis support service.
For students experiencing financial difficulties or struggling to access everyday necessities, Petey’s Pantry provides free food, hygiene products and other essential supplies. Located on the second floor of the Richard E. Winter Student Center, the pantry is another reminder that students can seek assistance with needs beyond their coursework.
Canisius also provides spaces for students to build community and explore their identities. The ALANA Student Center offers cultural programming, community–building opportunities and support for students from historically underrepresented backgrounds. Students interested in getting involved can explore clubs, organizations and leadership opportunities through Student Engagement while Campus Ministry provides opportunities for reflection, service and community.
With so many resources available, students do not have to wait until they are struggling to seek support. Whether it is visiting a tutor before an exam, meeting with a success coach, accessing health services or finding a community on campus, there are opportunities to make college a more manageable and meaningful experience.
Sometimes, making the most of college starts with knowing where to go. Every Griff should know that support is available beyond the classroom.
