Oh Honey

Hi Honeys, 

Welcome to the first official week of everyone’s favorite (and only) Canisius University advice column, Oh Honey! To those of you who do not know who I am or what this column is, I am Dominic Vivolo, and I have decided to donate my sweet and precious time to you all, every paper, to help you lost souls find some form of happiness every week. Sadly, I am not an ethereal being, so I can’t do everything, but I can do the next best thing: answer your questions! Our inaugural question has to do with everyone’s favorite sporting event: The Super Bowl! Our question is from a disgruntled Bills fan and is as follows: 

“Should I even be a Bills fan anymore? Every other fanbase seems to be so much happier than we are, and the Bills just kick me in the gut every single year. My dad says I should switch over to the Cleveland Browns as ‘that’s a team for quitters,’ but I don’t like their city or color scheme…what should I do?”

Oh honey, I am going to start this off by giving you a hug across this paper as I feel your pain. As the son of a dad who will not stop talking about the Bills during their four consecutive Super Bowl losses, I understand wanting to switch teams to one that looks like they have a brighter future and are not cursed in any way. I also often reflect on why I chose to be a Bills fan so many years ago. 

When I started, we were in our playoff drought. I was younger and didn’t know how football worked, but I still liked watching the games for the slim chance we would win a game and see my dad smile on a Sunday afternoon. That is why I still remain a Bills fan to this day. Every loss brings me hope for next year; every win brings me hope for this year; and if we ever tie, I can say, “Wow, I witnessed a Bills tie.” 

If my personal reasoning does not convince you to stay with the Bills Mafia, then I have something for you to consider – specifically, why other teams may not be as happy as you think. Have you seen the Jets? Enough said. Have you seen the Cardinals? Enough said. Your dad wanted you to switch to the Browns? HAVE YOU SEEN THE BROWNS? That is enough said. 

Stay with the Bills if you want, but just know this: you have the best fanbase around – and you could always be doing worse, honey. Now, go enjoy the Super Bowl and hope it is a fun game to watch, no matter who wins. Whatever you do, do not bet on a team winning and wager your beard as collateral. Who would be dumb enough to do that?
