Men’s Cross Country continues dominant performance at Little Three Championships

The Canisius University men’s cross country team brought home their 20th consecutive Little Three Championship this past weekend as the Griffs kicked off their 2026 campaign in Buffalo, N.Y.
The Golden Griffins took on local rivals Niagara and St. Bonaventure for their annual rendition of the event. The men’s side brought home the win with a combined team score of 26 points. Junior Fenway Breckles, following last year’s performance where he set a personal record with a time of 15:18.8, started the season strong, finishing at 15:29.3 and leading the Griffs with his third place finish.
The upperclassman is looking to have a standout season following last season’s prowess, where he had a career best in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Cross Country Championships with a 25:53.7 in the 8k event. Breckles was also tabbed this week's Metro Conference Performer of the Week.
In the Griffs historic win at Delaware Park, juniors Nathaniel Fisher, Ryan Giglia and Joseph Capuzzo led the Canisius pack as the team placed nine runners within the top 12.
While the women’s team finished in third, a certain athlete’s collegiate debut shows immense promise for this upcoming season. Freshman Emily Priset took home sixth place in her collegiate debut with a time of 19:36.9. The western New York native from Clarence, N.Y. is coming off a high school career where she garnered a state qualifier and team Most Valuable Player (MVP).
Sophomore Julia Gullo also showcased what the women’s team has in store this season placing in the top 15 of runners with a time of 20:12.9. Although the women weren’t able to bring home top honors, the effort and success of the underclassmen showed promise for their fall season.
The Griffs will get a two–week break to rest and recoup as they prepare for the National Catholic Championship at Notre Dame in South Bend, Ind. set for Sept. 14. The men’s side will seek to continue their bountiful start of the season while on the women’s side, the underclassmen will continue to develop the ability to grow and progress as the season continues.
