This past Saturday, the women’s and men’s swimming and diving teams competed against Bowling Green University, the University of Rochester and Siena College.
The men’s team brought home their first win of the season against Bowling Green with a final score of 178–112. Juniors Samuel Vidal and Toby Mayfield were both standouts, taking first place in all of their events. Vidal and Mayfield placed first and second, respectively, out of all the men competing. Vidal also had the top two swims of the meet in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 58.05 and the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:48.81.
Currently one of the top swimmers in the MAAC, Vidal said, “It’s exciting to see where you are compared to the others and the other teams.” Vidal holds the 200-yard breaststroke record and a relay record in the conference. His goal for the season is to break his current record in the breaststroke.
Sophomore Elliot Somers has also been racking in first and second place finishes so far this season. Somers said, “our mindset this year is different, I think we’re a lot more ambitious, just with our personal goals and driving each other in practice.” Somers placed fourth overall in the tournament, while also recording a top-five finish for the 100 yard backstroke, clocking in a time of 51.29. When asked about his goals for this season he said, “I’m currently in competition to win the MAAC in a couple of events, the 100 back and 100 fly.”
The women’s team also brought home their first win of the season against the University of Rochester 161–138, sadly falling short to both Siena and Bowling Green. Freshman Daphne Mead made her mark placing first in the 200-yard IM with a season best time of 2:07:49. Daphne placed ninth overall in the women’s competition, staying consistent in her performance as one of the team’s strongest swimmers.
Both the men’s and women’s teams will be back in action at SUNY Geneseo on Saturday at 1 p.m.
