Meet The Section: The Most Opinionated Griffin Staff

By: Hannah Wiley, Assistant Features Editor

Do you like sharing your opinion? Well, I can guarantee you don’t like it as much as our new opinion staff Courtney Lyons and Mikayla Boyd!

Courtney Lyons is a senior Political Science and English double major, with minors in Criminal Justice, International Relations and History. She’s also this year's new opinion editor! After printing for the first time last week, Courtney said “it was like a combination of nervousness and excitement…it was so exciting to have my name in print as editor!” This year, she hopes to expand the opinion section and make it more diverse with new voices and opinions.

Outside of The Griffin, Courtney is also the bursar for Phi Sigma Sigma, is an FYE peer mentor, Writing Center tutor, research assistant, vice president of Alpha Sigma Nu, treasurer of Phi Alpha Delta, and is a member of Mock Trial, Model UN, DiGamma honors society, and ODK, the leadership honors society.

Her favorite article she ever wrote for The Griffin is “Sue to you, mom to me,” where she honored her mom and all she does for the Canisius community. Anyone who knows Courtney knows that one of the most important things in her life is her family. She is also the staff’s resident Disney adult! Courtney and her family have been to Disney 37 times! The Features section is going to start a petition that The Griffin staff should be invited to the next “Lyons’ Family Disney Vacation.”

It’s clear Courtney is one of the coolest people on staff this year, and you know what’s even cooler? Courtney and her sisters are all named after characters or actresses from TV shows! Courtney is named after Courtney Thorne-Smith from Melrose Place!

Her partner in crime, and if you ask Courtney, someone who she could write thousands of words about, is Assistant Opinion Editor and Layout Team member Mikayla Boyd. Mikayla – a junior Political Science major with minors in Philosophy and International Relations – is one of the most dedicated people on our staff. This is her second year on the staff and she is one of the only members on The Griffin that holds two positions. Each week, Mikayla not only writes and edits for the Opinion sections, but she does the entirety of the Opinion/Creative Corner layout! “I’m so thankful Courtney’s my editor, she understands because we’re so close that some weeks I need to focus more on layout,” Mikayla said. Taking on two positions this year has been a learning curve, but she has exactly the right person by her side to help her through it!

Outside of The Griffin, Mikayla is a PHI 101 TA, the vice president of Model UN, a member of Tri Alpha – the first gen honors society– and ODK – the leadership honors society. She’s also a member of Phi Alpha Delta, as well as an admissions social media team member! Her favorite article she’s written was headlined “Up, Up, and Away: Advice from a First-Time Flier!” If you ever see Mikayla on campus, ask her to show you her newest trick; over the summer, she taught herself how to snap out of spite after attending a Model UN conference. While you’re at it, also ask about her two birds, Teddy and Ellie!

The Griffin office wouldn’t be the same without two of the most talented (and opinionated) staff there is! If you ever see Courtney or Mikayla on campus, trust me; they are two people incredibly worth getting to know!
