Mead Breaks Records: Men’s Swim and Dive swim their way to first win of the season

On Saturday, Oct. 18, the men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams faced the University of Rochester and Siena University in their second meet of the season.
The men pulled out their first win of the season with a final score of 168-125 against the University of Rochester. The men secured every top spot, with senior Sam Vidal taking first for points and performance. He also placed first in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:49.97 and first in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 57:77. Juniors Elliot Somers and Tom McCabe took first and third, respectively, in the 200-yard freestyle, with senior Toby Mayfield taking second. Somers swam a time of 1:44.77, Mayfield with 1:45.23 and McCabe with 1:46.05. McCabe also finished first in the 100-yard freestyle with a personal best time of 47:59.
Sophomore Giovanni Poggio finished first in the 200-yard breaststroke with a season-best time of 2:08.59 and first in the 200-yard individual medley with a season-best time of 1:56.98. He also placed second in the 100-yard breaststroke with a season-best time of 59:33. The Canisius A 200-yard medley relay came in first with a time of 1:34.55, with the B and C relays following close behind in third and fourth. The Canisius A 200-yard freestyle relay came in first with a time of 1:26.97, with the B relay coming in third with a time of 1:31.50.
On the women’s side, Canisius faced both the University of Rochester and Siena University with a final score of 507.1 from the Griffs. Sophomore Daphne Mead is starting out her season with a splash as she swam pool records in both the 200-yard backstroke and 200-yard individual medley and placed first in both events. Mead was also named the MAAC Swimmer of the Week on Wednesday.
Mead's 200-yard individual medley was the third overall top swim of the meet with a season-best time of 2:07.10. Her 200-yard backstroke, a season-best time of 2:06.25, was sixth overall in races of the meet. Junior Evie Leighton placed first in the 100-yard freestyle with a season-best time of 53:48. Mead placed second overall in points and Leighton placed fourth.
The Griffs face SUNY Geneseo at home this Friday, Oct. 24, at the Burt Flickinger Center at 6 p.m.
