MAAC Announces Change to Basketball Championship

By Colin Richey, Sports Editor

The Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) announced on Thursday, October 3, that there will be a new format for the Hercules Tires MAAC Men’s and Women’s Basketball Championships. Starting in 2025, the top 10 teams will qualify for the tournament, meaning three teams will miss out on the chance to compete for the championship.

According to the MAAC’s website, “This marks the first time in the league’s 44-year history that the championship will not include every conference team.”

MAAC Commissioner Travis Tellitocci explained, “Our primary focus throughout the evaluation of the tournament format and schedule has been to elevate the visibility of the MAAC Basketball Championships. With the Conference expanding to 13 schools, this new format establishes an effective structure for the championships, with more exciting updates on the horizon.”

The tournament will begin on Tuesday, March 11, and play until Saturday, March 15. The Griffs begin their quest to qualify for the tournament when MAAC play begins on Friday, Dec. 6 for the men and Thursday, Dec. 19 for the women.
