The women’s basketball team came up with their second win of the regular season, and in doing so completed their 2–0 sweep against cross-town rival Niagara on Tuesday, Feb. 3. This victory saw career performances from multiple players, giving the team their strongest win of the season.
It was senior Franka Wittenberg and sophomore Irene Rey Pineda who led the Griffs to victory with 10 points each. The team dominated on both ends of the court with a strong night on the boards from juniors Shariah Gailes and Antionique Auston who notched seven rebounds each. After the win, Wittenberg commented on her teammates' hustle and hard work all week in practice that led them to the victory at home. “I think it’s just the way we push each other and make each other better everyday,” said Wittenberg.
The 74–58 victory over Niagara improved the Griffs to 2–11 in MAAC play, leaving them one game behind Rider in MAAC standings. With only the top 10 teams advancing to the MAAC Championships, Head Coach Tiffany Swoffard believes her team can continue to inch closer to that margin if “they continue to push one another and get stronger while staying steadfast.”
After a celebratory night at home the team returned to the court on Thursday, Feb. 5 to face the Quinnipiac Bobcats, who had yet to lose a regular season game. While the Griffs had a strong performance winning the first quarter, the Bobcats came out hungry in the second quarter and went on a run that the Griffs could not come back from. Sophomore Yasmine Djibril was able to collect a career high 20 points and even led the court in points. Wittenberg, unlike Tuesday, stayed reserved in scoring, but dominated on the boards for her team. With the loss on Thursday, the Griffs fell to 2–12 on the regular season.
Women’s basketball will hit the road for their next series of games, visiting Iona on Thursday, Feb. 12, before a short bus ride to Manhattan on Saturday, Feb. 14.
