This past weekend, the Canisius golf team traveled to Hamilton, NY kicking off their season at the Alex Lagowitz Memorial Invitational.
This invitational consisted of three rounds, the first two taking place on Saturday, Sept. 6, with the final round concluding Sunday afternoon. With last year’s Canisius Male Athlete of the Year Ryan Edholm’s graduation, the team has changed quite a bit.
In spite of an hour-long rain delay, juniors Mikey Takacs and Alex Schickling both scored within strokes of the par-72, with Takacs scoring 73(+1) and Schickling scoring 74(+2), respectively. Sophomore Chase Burgess also got in on the action, birdieing twice to score a 76(+4).
The second round of the invitational was postponed due to another rain delay, moving it to 8 a.m. the next morning. This seemed to be no problem for freshman Cole Thompson, who finished the round with a score of 70(-2), his first round under par in only his second-ever collegiate match.
The final round saw Takacs finish 2 over par which was enough to notch him a tie for 27th place, making him the Griffs’ highest scorer of the weekend. Thompson also had a notable showing, posting 1 over par in the third round and 10 over par for the invitational.
Canisius finished 14th with a score of 902, while the winner of the Invite, Lehigh University, finished with a score of 856. The Griffins will travel to Omaha, NE this weekend to play in the Bluejay Invitational at Creighton University.
