The Canisius golf team finished in 10th at the 14th annual Matthews Auto Collegiate tournament in Apalachin, N.Y., hosted by Binghamton University this past Sunday and Monday.
The field for the 36–hole tournament was made up of 13 different schools, including Little Three Rival St. Bonaventure and Metro Conference foes Iona and Saint Peter’s.
The Griffs, hot off of their best 54–hole score since 2009 two weeks ago, looked to not repeat their opening day 20–over outing from that tournament. On day one, sophomore Cole Thompson led the way shooting a two–over 74, placing him in a tie for 20th. Seniors Jake Dantonio and Mikey Takacs both finished tied for 29th after the two golfers shot a three–over 75. Junior Chase Burgess recorded the last under–80 score amongst the team’s scoring players with a 78. The team overall shot 14–over, a 302, in the opening round placing them in a tie for 9th with Iona heading into Monday morning.
The second round came and went, and the Blue and Gold dropped to 10th place. As a team, they shot a 316, and while it was a disappointing 18–holes, the Griffs still had some standouts. Dantonio and Thompson shot four–over and six–over respectively, good enough for top 25 finishes. For Dantonio, it was his second top 25 finish of the season while Thompson has placed in the top 35 in each tournament played this year. Graduate student Matthew Santini and Takacs were the other scorers on the day, shooting an 80 and 82. Canisius finished the tournament three spots ahead of Saint Peter’s and six spots behind Iona.
Overall, Bucknell won the team portion of the tournament after shooting even–par on day one and seven–over on day two , marking the Bisons’ first win in five years. LaSalle’s Gavin Dosch had the best tournament individually, shooting 5–under par off the back of an impressive first round score of 67.
Canisius will now set their sights for the Bucknell Golf Club in Lewisburg, Pa. where Bucknell University is scheduled to host their 54–hole invitational from Oct. 11–13. The tournament stands as another annual tournament for the Griffs, one in which they have placed 15th, out of 18, in each of the last three seasons.
