For our series “Editors’ Picks,” we ask the staff each the same question and give you their unfiltered responses– interruptions included. Happy picking!
Question: What’s the spookiest thing that’s ever happened to you on or off campus?
Sara: My phone number is apparently the former number of a now dead gravesite caretaker, so I’d always get calls from families about needing gravesites for their deceased loved ones.
Hannah: Seeing Kaitlin O’Meara passing me in the halls. (this is offensive to me (Kaitlin O’meara)).
Kaitlyn:
Sophie: My freshman year I used to be a lifeguard on campus, and I’d get done when it was dark out, so one time my mom got so nervous that I was walking home alone that she called public safety – AKA the time I rode in a cop car.
Andrew: At times really late at night, I’ve been on the third or fourth floor of Old Main and heard noises
Lily: Old Main is definitely haunted…
Lucas: I used to work at the naval park, and we would do security shifts. The naval park is haunted as a rule, based on who you talk to, but every time I was on the port side of the USS Little Rock, I would always have the distinct impression that something was staring down on me intensely. Even though I would know there wasn’t any way that there could be anyone up there, I got that impression every time.
Katie: Back in high school, I was googling my crush’s dad and I found out that LinkedIn tells you when you view someone’s profile. I felt my heart drop to my stomach and that was the scariest thing that’s ever happened to me. So now I have a fake LinkedIn. Her name is Tyra.
Peter: I don’t have literally any spooky stories. Does "spooky" have to imply ghosts? There’s a bike path that goes behind my house, and I was out there one time and someone just appeared in front of me. So that was spooky.
Colin: So this wasn’t spooky but it was scary for me. I was in Chicago when I was 16 and the lady at the front desk of the hotel I was staying at recommended that I go to this fun house, and I was in, like, the maze of mirrors and I had never felt more scared and alone in my life. I ended up retracing my steps and running out the entrance. I heard a gunshot on my way out.
Peter: Sounds like classic Chicago.
Kaitlin: Our old house was haunted by a ghost…so that was spooky.
Mo: On Oct. 30th, 2025, I was gripped forcefully by a man.
