The Canisius men’s soccer team won their opening MAAC matchup on Saturday against Rider, defeating the Broncs 1–0. Now 1–0 in conference play, and currently riding a two-game win streak, the Griffs have built momentum as the heart of the season ensues.

Rider dominated the majority of the game, outshooting Canisius 4–2 in the first half and 8–1 in the second half. The Griffs relied on the stellar play of goaltender Dom Dominguez. The grad student was coming off a four-save game against Mercyhurst, which resulted in a 3–1 victory for the Griffs. Once again, Canisius would need Dominguez’s excellence between the pipes to carry the Golden Griffins to victory.

During the 76th minute of play, a miscommunication in Rider’s back end led to the lone goal in the contest. Defender Ricky Joasilus attempted to head the ball back to goalkeeper Marius Helias, but the header snuck past the out-of-position goalkeeper and into the net. Thanks to the shutout from Dominguez, which included five saves, the Griffs held on to the 1–0 lead until the game was over. The Griffs earned their first MAAC opening win since 2011, and have now won two away games after failing to earn a road win last season.

Sophomore midfielder Romero Nicolazzo explained the mindset entering the game against the Broncs: “We knew Rider was going to be a challenge coming in as they are always near the top of the MAAC, while things did not go as planned, we stuck together as a team, and that helped us get the win.”

Dominguez was named MAAC Men’s Soccer Defensive Player of the Week for his efforts against Mercyhurst and Rider, helping the Griffs win back-to-back games. Nicolazzo spoke highly of his teammate, adding, “Dom has been fantastic for us. He deserved to get that honor. It just shows us we have a well-rounded team, and no position is lacking. Everyone on the team has the same goal, which is to win the MAAC.”

The Griffs will try to carry their momentum back home with them as they host the reigning MAAC Champions Iona at the Demske Sports Complex on Saturday, with kickoff scheduled for 3 p.m.
