On Thursday, Nov. 5th, Canisius University was named as an Economic Champion for the year of 2026 by the Buffalo Niagara Partnership. They recognized the university for their facilities on campus, success of students and their investments in developing the workforce. The Economic Champions program is made to honor organizations and businesses alike that contribute to both economic growth and opportunity.

The opening of the Golisano Center for Student Success in Spring 2026, which combined academic support, career development and student wellness services into one area for better convenience for students and faculty alike, was the beginning of why the award was given out. The $4.4 million investment into the center assisted in allowing Canisius to receive this recognition.

In June 2026, Canisius University unveiled the Master of Science in the occupational therapy pathway in collaboration with St. Bonaventure University. This pathway adheres to students who are seeking to be an occupational therapist as the demand for this position increases.

These pathways help students find permanent employment when the job market is consistently growing and not allowing Canisius students the chance to catch the wave.

Additionally, to the expansion of pathways, Canisius also introduced a 4+2 pathway with Syracuse University for engineering and technology students. This program allows graduate students to earn their bachelor's degree from Canisius University and master's degree in engineering or computer science from Syracuse University.

Their recognition for 2026 marks the second year in a row that Canisius has received the honorable designation of Economic Champion. They received it in 2025 for their $6 million of investments towards campus development of the now open Golisano Center, the continuing modernization of Old Main and the large amounts of development done to Science Hall as well as the athletic and wellness facilities around campus.

Canisius University lives up to their top ranking of Jesuit universities by introducing new programs, pathways and organizations that help students reach their success and fullest potential in their academics.
