Canisius golf competed in their first tournament of the 2026 spring season, climbing the ranks over the course of the outing to place 11th in a pool of 14.
The Griffs traveled to Urbana, Md. for the Carpetbagger Classic, which took place over the course of this past weekend across two days. Canisius got off to a rough start on Saturday, finishing the day in last place in team standings with a combined score of 317.
The Blue and Gold didn’t have any golfers under par on day one. The closest was freshman Cole Thompson who finished with a 74, just two below the 72 par. This showing was good enough to place Thompson 18th overall for the first day of the tournament.
Day two saw improvement across the board for Canisius. Junior Mikey Takacs posted two under par with a score of 70. Takacs recorded four birdies on the day, a performance which helped him climb 30 spots on the leaderboard, making him the highest performing Griff on Sunday.
In terms of overall scoring, Thompson led the Griffs, tying for 46th with a score of 149 (+7). Takacs finished tied for 61st with 154 (+10) and juniors Jake Dantonio and Alex Shickling, who competed as individuals, finished 67th overall with scores of 155 (+11).
While Canisius began the weekend in 14th place, they ended the weekend in 11th, surpassing Saint Francis and Saint Peter’s while also tying Rider with a combined score of 613.
Mount St. Mary’s, the tournament hosts, won the tournament, going two over par. Their leading golfer, Jackson Roman, placed first overall in the tournament.
Canisius will play next on April 12 for day one of the Albarta Coca-Cola Invitational in Easton, Pa.
