Canisius golf looks to reclaim the Little Three Championship title

By Peter Neville, Assistant Sports Editor

As we enter our third week of classes this semester, the golf team enters its third tournament of the season in a matchup against their rivals in the Little Three Championship.

St. Bonaventure has dominated the Western New York rivalry as of late, winning seven straight renditions of the Little Three rivalry match, with 14 out of the 19 dating back to 2004. The Griffs will need to rely on their veteran leaders as they look to end the Bonnies' long-held run of dominance.

Last year, Ryan Edholm and Joey Maher, who are now in their senior seasons, finished in the top 15 overall for individual performances. Edholm ended with a final score of eight shots over par, while Maher finished 12 shots over par. But as a team, Canisius finished in a distant third place, 36 shots behind the winners, St. Bonaventure.

“I think this is the best team I’ve played on,” said Edholm. “We have a lot of talent this year and everyone needs to keep it simple, keep the ball in play especially at this golf course. We have the guys to go out and win it, we just need to do it.”

This Little Three tournament will be the last for Edholm and three other seniors, presenting an opportunity to get one over on their rivals in their last go around on the links.

Edholm continued, “It’s definitely a weird feeling being a senior this year; everything went by so quick. Especially since this is only my third Little Three after it got canceled my sophomore year due to weather. But my game feels good! I’ve had a good summer of play and a decent start to the fall season, so I’ll hope to keep that going.”

The Little Three Championship tees off from the Crag Burn Golf Club next Tuesday at 9 a.m. in East Aurora, New York, with Canisius hosting the 70th edition of the championship.
