Softball highlights strong performance at the plate as reason for success

By Isabella Custodi, Sports Reporter

Batting, the most challenging and important aspect of softball, is something that Canisius has found success with this season, propelling them up the standings in the MAAC.

At the plate, the Griffs are led by Gianna Fazzolari. The senior has increased her career home run total to 28, and is 11 RBIs away from second on the all-time Griff RBI leader list. She sits tied for second in the conference with nine home runs this season. Fazzolari also has the highest batting average of her team sitting at .352.

Junior Emily Ilano batted well against Iona over the weekend, maintaining her pace as the team leader in doubles with another in Game 2 of the series. Ilano also has an on base streak of 13 games, the best of any Griff on her team. Ilano's batting average for the season sits at .338, top-four on the team.

The athletes have been focused on finding success when they step up to the plate. “When we stick to our plan we are very successful at the plate, so I think just staying patient and picking good pitches will help us. I also think being able to make in-game adjustments to the pitcher or the umpire’s zone is crucial to our success,” says Ilano.

The Golden Griffins were very successful with hitting during their doubleheader on April 13 against Iona. Game one ended at 7-1 and game two ended at 8-3. The Griffs had a highly effective offense in both games, which is important for the success of any team.

One swing can change the game. Whether it be me swinging the bat, or someone else, there is always a job to get done and a spark to ignite on the field,” said Fazzolari.

The softball team has other players in the midst of successful offensive seasons, as well. Senior Christie McGee-Ross leads the team with triples and with runs scored. Her triples put her fourth in the conference. Junior Alyssa Courtier leads the team with eight stolen bases with ten attempts.

Next up for the Griffs is a three-series weekend against Siena in Buffalo, NY on April 20-21.
