After polling this round of first-year students, the Center for Student Engagement and Leadership Development (SELD) has brought cinema to Canisius’ grounds. “Griff-Flix” is a series of movies that are shown in the quad as well as Reggis depending on the date. The goal is for students to sit back, relax, enjoy the company of others, and simply partake in the jollity of a silver (projector) screen.
Students who attend the screenings will be able to fill out a punch card, and upon completing the card, they’ll receive a customized Griff-Flix reclinable lawn chair. Each event will also have various treats for you and your friends to enjoy.
The first installment of the series was Pixar’s “Inside Out 2” (2024) on Aug. 26, which had this writer in shambles and tears. I watched this movie for the first time at a drive-in and had to brace myself on the trunk of the car I was sitting in to avoid crying. On this second rewatch, I was not so lucky. “Inside Out 2” and Griff-Flix’s fourth installment, “Shrek” (2001), are not included in the punch cards, with the Pixar movie as a part of SELD's Welcome Week celebrations and the Dreamworks movie being in the lineup for Griff Weekend at the end of September.
The “Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle” (2017) screening on Thursday, Sept. 12, was to help celebrate National Video Game Day, and one of SELD’s newest employees, Jenna Quinn, was helping run the event. Quinn said that they “were very eager to get their foot in the door” doing events with SELD. The “Jumanji” screening involved making your own jungle mix, with popcorn as the base, and dried fruit, candy, chocolate, etc. mixed in.
Griff-Flix will also be showing “Pitch Perfect” (2012) and “Mean Girls” (2004) later this month to add to the lineup.
