Rowing’s A-squad ends first at the Yinzer Cup

By: Jay Ashdown

Canisius' Varsity Four A-squad earned a first-place finish in Saturday's Yinzer Cup in Pittsburgh, Penn. The quintet included coxswain Morgan Marsallo as well as rowers Ally Matrassi, Bridget Reilly, Destiny Severn and Isabella Bruno. This group worked hard and together as a unit and found a way to cross the finish line first with a time of 9:38.8. Canisius' other varsity four placed 10th, finishing with a time of 10:02.8.

In the varsity eight, Canisius' A-squad finished fourth with a time of 8:58.1. While this was a solid effort and time for Canisius, it was West Virginia's B-squad who claimed victory amongst the 10 finishers with a time of 8:45.8. The Griffs' varsity eight B-squad finished ninth, concluding the race in 10:02.9.

Saturday marked the second time Canisius has ever participated in the Yinzer Cup. With the varsity four victory, the Griffs have now claimed a first-place win in both appearances at the Robert Morris-hosted event. Canisius' Varsity Four A-squad has now won back-to-back events, having won last weekend's Head of the Niagara event.

The Griffs will return to the water on Oct. 30 in Philadelphia, Penn. where they’ll compete in the Head of the Schuykill Regatta.
